happy new year

What a terrific year it has been I can't believe how much has happened in such a short space of time. The way I have described the pace of this year has been the weeks have gone slowly but the months have flown by, I think this may be because I have been incredibly busy this year. I wanted to just highlight on a couple of the amazing things that have happened to me this year that have shaped probably one of the best years of my life.

i'm a Daddy...

I became a Father to the most beautiful little girl, my amazing wife delivered her into the world and at that moment everything stopped, at least it felt like it did. There are very few words to describe the feeling of becoming a dad, an overwhelming amount of emotions pour through your body to list a few, you feel pride, happiness and unconditional love but the one that hit me the hardest was the responsibility to provide. At the time I was working with FatFace Clothing in a job that could only be described as dead end, this leads nicely into my next point of the year.

i'm a junior software dev...

I became a Junior Software Developer, I've written about this a few times in previous articles, the ups, the downs and the fear. I think it is safe to say I have set myself a few strong challenges this year becoming a dad and starting a job I have very little experience in. I have been a Front End Developer for 4-5 years and have used Umbraco before but never have I really delved into the world of programming. Going back to one of the phrases that hit me when becoming a dad was the sense of responsibility and need to provide for my family, I knew staying with FatFace would get me absolutely no where so I had to act. I always tell other people that "fear is temporary, regret is forever!" I had  been offered an incredible opportunity, not for my skill but my attitude, I'd have been crazy to let that go.

It's been roughly 6 months and I can say with ease that it was one of the greatest decisions I have ever made. It's definitely been difficult and very stressful which added with the parenting has been a difficult recipe to deal with but my wife and I have made it work so that I can dedicate a reasonable portion of time to training, making sure I can progress at a reasonable pace, personal training combined with the day job is the key to success. I owe a lot to my wife for supporting me with this, I have had to sacrifice some daddy time for the training which is extremely difficult but we have worked together and found the balance and it works.

freelance work too...

I have also been really lucky with my freelance work and gained 6 new amazing clients, all with fantastic projects that have been a pleasure to work on. I am hoping 2020 will be just as busy and just as eventful, I am in the process of decorating my home office and making a place where I can work comfortably and peacefully which has been great fun and helps me welcome more work in 2020.

bring on 2020

I have had a lot of change in 2019, this has set my path for 2020 and I am so ready for it.

My daughter will change a lot in the next 12 months and I can't wait... walking, talking and lots of growing. It has been so amazing watching her become a little person which a lovely personality that I don't mean to wish her life away but I can't wait for her to take to the next stages in her life.

I will definitely have more challenges with the new job, mastering different languages and technologies will be a large part of next year, becoming certified in these areas will be my aim as a way to finish 2020. I have set a personal goal to have Junior removed from my title within 2 years as a Software Developer, it may be ambitious but it's achievable and with my training structure, new Development Manager and team I feel confident I can achieve this.

Here's to the New Year! I hope you all have a some amazing celebrations and a brilliant 2020!
